Features: Competition in the 21st century ultimately boils down to a competition for talent, and higher education institutions bear the direct responsibility of cultivating qualified individuals. Therefore, universities must strengthen the cultivation of computer knowledge and application skills among contemporary college students to inspire their innovative awareness, spark their enthusiasm for acquiring new knowledge, and enhance their practical abilities and self-directed learning capabilities. Due to the rapid development of computer technology, the basic computer education in higher education institutions must keep pace with the times in terms of teaching content, especially at the level of "Fundamentals of Computer Applications," where the teaching content undergoes significant changes and knowledge updates quickly. Thus, based on years of teaching experience and in accordance with the teaching syllabus for undergraduate computer foundation courses proposed by the Ministry of Education, we have promptly compiled the textbook "Fundamentals of Computer Applications." This book strives to align its structure, content selection, and writing style with the practical needs of computer public courses in higher education institutions. It is designed to improve the overall quality of college students, featuring novelty, strong operability, practicality, concise language, and a rich combination of text and illustrations. In terms of content selection, it aims for up-to-date material, substantial information, clear perspectives, and a forward-thinking approach, ensuring the textbook's foresight. Additionally, each chapter is accompanied by a content summary, experiments, and a variety of exercises. During the writing process, attention is paid to the integration of theory and practice, with an emphasis on organizing the content through specific, actionable examples to facilitate learning by doing. At the same time, the content on network applications and computer security awareness has been strengthened. Structurally, the book consists of seven chapters, covering topics such as computer fundamentals, the use of the Windows operating system, and the application of word processing software (Word), spreadsheet software (Excel), and presentation software (PowerPoint). It also includes multimedia technology and computer network knowledge (including the Internet and the use of Foxmail). To meet the needs of a broad readership, this book also includes a appendix on common computer faults and maintenance as well as software installation methods for reference.
