Features: The title "Close Reading" is chosen to avoid superficial appreciation and to genuinely assist readers in their interpretation. In writing, we strive to adhere to the following principles: Since the works are challenging yet require understanding, we avoid the temptation to simplify or evade difficulties. We eschew ambiguous or evasive language, aiming instead to propose clear and well-reasoned opinions based on close reading and balanced perspectives, providing readers with a more lucid interpretation. The idea that "poetry is indeterminate in meaning" or "literature is hard to definitively interpret" cannot serve as an excuse to shirk the responsibility of necessary explanation. The historical and open nature of understanding is precisely realized through continuous interpretation. To fulfill this purpose, all the authors of this book have devoted considerable effort and contributed their wisdom and dedication. Of course, our work is far from perfect, and our modesty stems from genuine limitations. As the great literary theorist Liu Xie lamented in his "The Heart of the Art of Writing · Appreciating the Reader": "The sound is indeed difficult to discern, and true understanding is rare—perhaps one in a thousand years!" In the face of those great literary masterpieces, we dare not claim to be true connoisseurs. What we can do is to strive to understand them as best as we can and reveal their rich meanings and extraordinary value.
