How is neonatal jaundice treated?

Patient's question:

My uncle's baby has only been born a few days and has a very yellow complexion. The hospital check-up said it's due to high jaundice. What impact does this condition have on the baby's health? How should the doctor treat it?

Doctor's answer:

This disease can be divided into two major categories: physiological and pathological. Physiological jaundice appears 2-3 days after birth, peaks between 4-6 days, and subsides within 7-10 days. Premature infants have a longer duration. Except for mild anorexia, there are no other clinical symptoms. If jaundice occurs within 24 hours after birth and does not subside within 2-3 weeks, worsens despite repeated episodes, or appears between one week and several weeks after birth, it is pathological jaundice and requires hospital treatment.
