Features: The 10 piano pieces included in this issue are adapted from Johann Sebastian Bach's (1685-1750) choral, organ, and symphonic works. "Aria" is selected from the "D Major Orchestral Suite," Op. 1068. It is the third of four orchestral suites composed by Bach during his stay in K?then (1717-1723). Some doubt whether the fourth suite is an addition. In Bach's time, the term "aria" generally referred to vocal works, although it could also refer to instrumental pieces and was often included in suites. It typically had a simple two-part structure with a song-like character. The "Gigue" is also from an orchestral suite: "The Second Orchestral Suite in B Minor for Flute and Orchestra" (Op. 1067). The "Gigue" is a lively dance-style piece with a uniform tempo. It appears at the end of the "B Minor Orchestral Suite," replacing the Gigue, which was usually used as a concluding dance.
