As a painter, I found that the ancient residential architecture, white-walled and blue-tiled, along with the crisscrossing streetscapes, stand out vividly against the backdrop of lush green mountains and clear waters. The humid climate of Jiangnan is refreshing, making it particularly suitable for painting watercolors, tempera paintings, and oil paintings. Thanks to this favorable combination of time and place, ancient villages like Xidi and Hongcun in Yi County attract tens of thousands of art students from hundreds of institutions across the country every year to sketch and become fixed teaching practice bases. These sketchers, with their easels and painting kits, moving back and forth along the streets, add another splendid sight to the ancient villages.
