Patient's question:
Is it possible for our child to inherit a genetic disorder from my girlfriend's uncle and brother, who are intellectually disabled? What is the probability of this happening?Doctor's answer:
Generally, there is no hereditary nature. There are many factors that can lead to children developing intellectual disability, most commonly due to ischemia and hypoxia during childbirth, which can cause encephalopathy. Intellectual disability is a group of symptoms caused by certain diseases or other harmful factors; it is not a distinct disease itself. In mild intellectual disability patients, some may have brain atrophy, developmental brain abnormalities, or associated with ataxia. The vast majority of patients have severe intellectual impairments and are accompanied by abnormalities in multiple organs, such as congenital heart disease, leukemia, and gastrointestinal malformations.
