Features: The 13th International Academic Conference on World Chinese Literature was held at Shandong University in September 2004. The publication of this anthology was supported by the Shandong University International Academic Conference Fund and the Special Fund for International Conferences of the School of Literature and Journalism at Shandong University. In November 2003, the conference organizing committee issued a call for papers based on the topics determined by the Academic Committee of the China Society of World Chinese Literature, and within six months, over 80 papers were received. The topics of this conference were proposed by the Academic Committee of the China Society of World Chinese Literature last November. These topics include "Poetics of World Chinese Literature in a Global Perspective," "Cultural Vitality and Ethnic Characteristics of World Chinese Literature," " Homeland and Transcendence in World Chinese Literature," "Identity Writing in World Chinese Literature," "History and Narrative Strategies of World Chinese Literature," "Building the Discipline of World Chinese Literature Studies," "Modern Transformation of Tradition and Overseas World Chinese Literature." These are all topics of concern in the field of World Chinese Literature in recent years and form the cornerstone of the discipline's development. The papers included in this anthology were originally not categorized under any specific topic. My categorization is based on the focus of each paper's discussion for the purpose of introduction.
