The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson - The Case of the Speckled Band

Author: (British) Arthur Conan Doyle

Publish Date: 2005-01-01
Features: On a foggy street in London called Baker Street, there lived a justice-seeking detective. He, along with his loyal doctor friend Watson, experienced countless bizarre cases. For example, why did a university professor crawl like an animal, or how did a goose's belly hide a gem? The "creators" of these cases—author Arthur Conan Doyle—was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1857. After obtaining a medical degree, he became a doctor. Due to the poor treatment of doctors in Britain at the time, he began writing. The Study in Scarlet was published after multiple rejections, and The Sign of Four made him famous, eventually becoming a detective novelist. In 1894, he decided to stop writing detective novels and had Holmes die in The Final Problem. However, readers were furious, and Conan Doyle had to bring Holmes back to life in The Empty House, followed by other detective novels like The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Valley of Fear. The protagonist, Holmes, became a globally renowned figure. In 2002, the Royal Society of Chemistry in the UK even posthumously inducted the detective character Holmes as an honorary member, an honor previously only granted to Nobel laureates or outstanding scholars and industrialists. Conan Doyle's novels are known for their rigorous structure, intriguing and captivating plots. The literary characters he created are vividly distinct, and in his writing, he integrated pathology, psychology, and other disciplines into detective art, forming a unique style in detective fiction.
