Features: The operating system is an essential basic system software in modern computer systems and a mandatory course for computer science majors as well as indispensable knowledge for those working in computer applications. This book is a revised version of the first edition, based on the author's many years of teaching and research in the Department of Computer Science at Tsinghua University. In the more than six years since the first edition of this book was published in 1993, the development of computer technology has been nothing short of remarkable. However, the UNIX operating system and its principles and technologies have not undergone fundamental changes. Whether it's the Windows series of operating systems or the UNIX series, their main principles still originate from UNIX. Therefore, while this book explains the principles of operating systems, it still uses the UNIX system as an example for illustration. However, to adapt to the development of computer hardware and software technology and to cultivate students' ability to master new technologies, this book has added new content such as threads and real-time scheduling, as well as made appropriate adjustments to some chapters, based on the first edition. The book is divided into 10 chapters. In addition to the introduction, the chapters are: Operating System User Interface, Process Management, Processor Scheduling, Memory Management, Examples of Process and Memory Management, File System, Device Management, Examples of File and Device Management, and Object-Oriented Operating System Design. This book can be used as a textbook for operating system courses in computer science or related majors, or it can also be used for self-study or reference by relevant technical personnel.
