Features: Vegetables are a staple supplementary food in people's daily lives. However, there is a noticeable off-season for vegetables in northern regions during August and September. Notably, the 2008 Beijing Olympics were held in August, making it crucial to ensure a steady supply of vegetables during this period. Bitter melon and loofah are key vegetable varieties that help maintain a consistent supply during the off-season. Additionally, with China's deepening reform and opening-up, people's living standards have been improving year by year. Some small-scale vegetable varieties that were once primarily consumed by farmers have gradually become popular in the market. These vegetables are favored for their rich nutrition, good taste, and strong resistance to adverse conditions. They not only attract urban consumers, enriching the variety of "vegetable baskets" but also benefit vegetable farmers. Bitter melon and loofah are typical representatives of these vegetable varieties. However, as "newcomers" in the vegetable world, the research on their seedling technology, cultivation techniques, and especially storage and processing technology still needs to be strengthened. Existing technologies also need to be widely promoted and disseminated to farmers. Therefore, we have compiled and written this book based on years of hands-on production experience and the latest research findings. It focuses on introducing excellent varieties, seedling technology, plant protection techniques, cultivation and management techniques, as well as storage and processing techniques for bitter melon and loofah. We hope this book will provide some assistance to grassroots agricultural technicians and in their production efforts.
