Features: The Filtered Sunshine is a novel about a father. Throughout history, works about fathers have predominantly focused on remembrance, with well-known examples like Zhu Ziqing's The Shadow. These often capture only a few scenes of parting at a station, expressing the deep longing of a son for his father through simple narration, highlighting the profound father-son bond. The Filtered Sunshine, however, is a longer middle, naturally differing from a concise essay. It also tells the story of a father but covers almost his entire life, portraying a relatively complete, rich, and thought-provoking father figure. The novel employs narrative techniques. While narrating a son's deep affection for his father, it also reflects the younger generation's scrutiny of the older generation. In other words, this is a work with an "examining father" consciousness, yet its critique of the older generation is filled with affection and a sense of history. This is what sets the novel apart from the ordinary. The story adopts a first-person perspective, examining the father through the son's eyes. In the son's view, the father lacks some self-respect, determination, and fierceness but possesses more meekness, humility, and weakness. This is a flaw in the father's character, causing the son to feel shame and sorrow. However, the father is also an upright, just, and responsible person. After joining the army, the son's attitude toward his father undergoes a fundamental change. Before enlisting, the son was indifferent to his father, even hostile, stubbornly never calling him "Dad." After joining the army, due to his maturity, the countless dialogues (correspondence) between the two men lead to a comprehensive understanding and reassessment of his father. As the father says in one letter, nothing can be judged without considering the specific context of the time—much like historical figures, we cannot re-imagine them today. The son agrees with this view. In fact, this is also the author's perspective. This perspective is reflected not only in the character of the father in the novel but also in the character of the team leader. Therefore, in my opinion, this is a work with a sense of history, even though it narrates almost ordinary, everyday events. For example, the novel depicts the father's humiliating subservience to the team leader, which the son finds shameful, but it also shows the father once cursing the team leader's unreasonable behavior and mistreating his wife under the influence of alcohol. When drunk, the father has been rough to his wife and children, but deep down, he is filled with love for them. Once sober, he looks at his family with a sense of shame, and in his eyes, we can see his remorse and helplessness. The father was once pursued by a female classmate in university. Their shared language and interests brought them close, but the father is fundamentally a man who values emotions and intellect. He did not abandon morality or feelings to enjoy the happiness he had already secured and returned to his mother's side. The author portrays all these aspects with emotional depth and a rich human touch, demonstrating his skill in handling plot and selecting details. This is crucial for a novel that takes character development as its primary mission.
