A boy named Isaac from the United States starts at the age of 10 and goes to the undeveloped forest of the Mississippi every year to hunt a bear known as "Old Man." The bear is a noble opponent of humanity, and they must deal with it with lofty principles and just behavior. Isaac learns humility and self-esteem from the old black man Sam, who "was humbled by suffering and developed self-esteem through patience," and an unconquerable wild bear. At the age of 16, the hunters, with the help of a hunting dog tamed by Sam, killed Old Man. However, Sam also passed away almost at the same moment—the great enemy is dead, and the natural hero has no intention of lingering in the world. Isaac once again learns the true meaning of life from the sorrow. A boy named Jody, who grew up on the prairies of central America, accidentally gets a beautiful little red horse. This luxury makes him an object of admiration for the boys. Jody takes good care of it, feeding it carrots, grooming its mane, taking it for walks, one day the little red horse catches a cold after getting wet in the rain. He uses alcohol to cool it down, steam to treat it, and even helps it with an operation to drain pus. He stays up all night taking care of it, trying every possible method to save it, but the little red horse's condition still worsens. When the boy wakes up in the morning, he finds the little red horse has broken the fence and run up the mountain to die. Dark vultures surround it, one vulture stands on the horse's head, dripping water from a horse's eyeball. The boy goes crazy and fights the vultures. In the end, facing a pile of rotten bird corpses, he cries.
