I once worked with a young man named Li in my previous company. He was a graduate student. Whenever he spoke, he would blush and often speak in a roundabout way. I didn’t realize this about him until one business trip, when he embarrassed me. Li, along with another female colleague, sat opposite me on the train returning from Zhengzhou. After returning from the restroom, I sat down to read the newspaper. After a while, Li suddenly said to me, "Your shoes are nice. Where did you buy them?" I lifted my foot, glanced at the shoes, and then put my foot down. "I bought them at Xidan. If you want to buy them, just go to Zhongyou Department Store." Li didn’t say anything and seemed to think about it. Soon after, he said, "Your knees are a bit dirty." I thought, Why is Li being so cheeky today? Why should I care? I didn’t even lift my head, still flipping through the newspaper, and said, "In this week-long business trip, I’ve barely had a chance to sit down, let alone lie in the fields to look at blueprints. How could they not be dirty?"
Less than five minutes later, Li stood up and said, "I’m going to the restroom. Want to come?" I was getting annoyed—he was clearly trying to start a conversation out of nowhere. I snapped, "I just got back. My seat’s still warm! You can go alone!" What made it even more frustrating was that less than two minutes later, that guy actually called my phone. I saw it was his number and hung up, but he kept calling. When I answered, I was about to tell him he was crazy, but he cut in first, "Dude, I just wanted to tell you your zipper’s undone."
Strawberries and Toilet Paper
Two days ago, my wife’s workplace gave us a box of about five or six pounds of strawberries. As soon as we brought them home, my daughter couldn’t wait to try them. I opened the box, but instead of strawberries, I saw a layer of tissue paper. I lifted one layer, only to find another layer underneath. I peeled away five or six layers, pushed aside some scraps of paper, and finally saw the strawberries. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that there were another five or six layers of tissue paper underneath the strawberries. There weren’t many strawberries, but the box was filled with tissue paper. I picked up the stack of tissue paper and weighed it in my hands—it was easily more than two pounds. So, my wife and I were furious at the packer for being so greedy. But then my mother walked over, snatched the tissue paper, and said, "You don’t understand. This is a buy-one-get-one-free deal." (Haidong)
Baby Face
I have a baby face. Now that I’m in my mid-thirties, my colleagues still say I look young, like I’m barely over thirty. I always thought they were just being nice, but a few days ago, when I went to the hospital for a checkup, I realized they weren’t wrong. The elderly traditional Chinese medicine doctor took my pulse, asked about my condition, and then had his young female apprentice, who was sitting opposite me, fill out my lab report. After the female doctor wrote her name, she asked me, "In your twenties?" I was taken aback and answered honestly, "I’m 36." The female doctor didn’t seem to hear clearly or perhaps my answer was too different from her expectations. She looked at me closely and asked again, her tone certain, "I’m asking—your twenties?" I was getting annoyed and snapped back, "I’m 36." The female doctor hesitated for a moment, reluctantly writing "36" on the lab report. I thought, This doctor really has poor eyesight. Do I look that young to you?
I had just walked out of the consultation room with my lab report when the female doctor followed me out. I thought,
