Features: The Castle is one of Kafka's representative long novels. It tells the story of the protagonist K, who travels through the snow to a village near the castle. He tries every means to enter the castle but never succeeds. Like The Trial, this novel depicts a vast bureaucratic institution and the countless offices and officials under its operating system. Meanwhile, K, an ordinary surveyor, seems to be trapped in an endless path within these bureaucratic structures. At the village head's house, K experiences the true power of the castle. This power is not explicitly stated but is instead manifested through a series of convoluted and complex processes. These processes are recorded in mountains of files, impossible to sift through. No one bothers to ask. It is precisely this past exercise of power that leaves K unable to determine his own identity, highlighting a sense of absurdity. K struggles tirelessly, but the village head, with his lengthy, tedious yet clear narration, explains the whole story to K, aiming to dispel any fantasies in his mind and point out his only path forward: a life of melancholic alienation as a stranger, forever unable to rise above his current state, with no improvement in sight, and needing to tread carefully to avoid danger. And indeed, after every one of K's efforts, the result is only farce or confusion. After each conclusion, the castle remains motionless, all paths ahead uncertain. However, K remains full of energy. He no longer worries about his "final fate" of death and starts making small calculations for the day. Sometimes he even becomes complacent, finding hope in despair. In the end, we see him, despite numerous failed efforts, still waiting for the right moment to rise again.
