Features: The protagonist of the novel, Emma Woodhouse, is young, beautiful, intelligent, and wealthy. However, she has a particular fondness for matchmaking and often acts impulsively rather than sensibly. Harriet is an illegitimate child but is young, beautiful, and deeply admired by Emma. Emma believes that Harriet, though not particularly intelligent, would be a great pity if paired with Robert Martin, who has neither wealth nor status. She insists that Harriet should marry a gentleman of high standing. As a result, Emma introduces Harriet successively to the Reverend Mr. Elton and the young, wealthy Frank Churchill, but both attempts end in deadlock. Mr. Elton, frustrated by his unsuccessful pursuit of Emma and understanding her intentions, becomes quite annoyed. He holds Harriet in little regard and soon marries the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Meanwhile, Frank has already secretly pledged his love to the beautiful and refined Jane Fairfax, who lacks property. The comical mismatches Emma creates cause her considerable distress. However, despite her lack of success in matchmaking, Emma herself finds happiness, marrying the outstanding George Knightley. Although this contradicts her earlier vow of lifelong bachelorhood, in love, she no longer cares. The novel ends with a happy resolution where the lovers finally come together.
