Features: In court, a prostitute named Maslova is sentenced to four years of hard labor for being accused of theft. As a juror, Count discovers that the Maslova before him is actually Katusha, a maid from his aunt's household. She was once a beautiful and innocent girl. Seven years ago, she was seduced and impregnated by, and then expelled from her master's home. In a desperate situation, she became a prostitute. Now, seeing theMaslova ruined by his own sins, his conscience is deeply troubled, and he decides to fight for the falsely accused Maslova. He goes to the presiding judge, hoping to overturn the original verdict. After being refused, he visits prominent social figures and travels between cities tirelessly preparing for the appeal. However, as expected, the appeal fails. Thus, he gives up his land and distributes it to the peasants; abandoning his luxurious noble life, he accompanies Maslova to Siberia for exile. Along the way, he does his best to help the "innocent" prisoners, and all of this deeply moves Maslova, who begins to unconsciously change for him: gradually starts listening to his words, learns to protect herself, and gives up her bad habits of smoking and drinking. However, to avoid damaging his reputation and status, she ultimately refuses his proposal and marries Simonson, a "revolutionary" who deeply loves her, thus achieving a spiritual and moral "rebirth" for both the male and female protagonists.
