Or was he a profound thinker, "who fearlessly challenged all evil with great courage" and a literary master "who combined the talents of a satirist, a fantasy writer, and a realist"? Why did he burn the manuscript of this work, which he had spent two years writing up to the fifteenth chapter, and then pick up the pen again, spending twelve years and revising it eight times? With full knowledge of his terminal illness and impending death, under the hardships of life, heavy mental pressure, and the certainty that the work would never be published, what force sustained him in revising and expanding it until the very end of his life? Now, at least it can be said that some people condemned him posthumously as a "politically opposed novelist and an unserious humorist," calling his works "deliberately pleasing to readers" or "maliciously satirical toward reality." These conclusions were too hasty. Restoring Bulgakov's reputation became a significant event in the Soviet literary world, and his works remained so popular in the 1980s—there must be an inherent reason for this. We should strive to explore his creative intentions through his thoughts, life, and creative path, and seek the source of his artistic charm and the answers to the aforementioned questions within the work itself.
