Childhood is part of Gorky's trilogy of autobiographical novels. As early as the 1890s, Gorky had the idea of writing biographical works. Between 1908 and 1910, Lenin visited Gorky at his villa on Capri Island in Italy, and Gorky spoke to him on several occasions about his childhood and youth. Once, Lenin said to Gorky, "You should write everything down, old friend, you must! Everything here is extremely meaningful!" Gorky replied, "One day, I will write it down." Soon after, he fulfilled this promise.
