Publish Date: 1973-05-01
Features: Mother is one of Gorky's renowned works. The novel portrays the transformation of young worker Pavel and his mother Nilofona into conscious revolutionary fighters amidst the waves of revolution, shaping a well-rounded image of the socialist new person. It realistically and concretely reflects the historical progress of Russia's second revolution period. The novel was written between June 1906 and April 1907 in the United States and Italy, and was soon translated into English. It was first serialized in the Appleton Magazine in New York from December 1906 to June 1907. In April 1907, an English translation was published in the United States, and in July, German and Russian translations were published in Berlin, while an English translation was also published in London (titled Comrades). In Russia, it was serialized in the annual collection edited by the St. Petersburg Knowledge Publishing House from the second half of 1907 to 1908, but it was arbitrarily censored by the Tsarist government's press censorship authorities. Ten years later, in 1917, a complete original edition was finally published in Russia.
