Features: Aesthetics, as a science that studies the general laws and principles of beauty in nature, society, and the field of art, focuses on exploring major propositions such as the essence of beauty, the relationship between art and reality, and the general laws of artistic creation. Throughout the long course of human civilization, the pursuit and exploration of the laws of beauty have poured generations of sages and talents into their sweat and blood. Among the vast Western classics, selecting and introducing the masterpieces through a concise summary is indeed a beneficial endeavor to guide people to navigate the profound ocean of aesthetics. Jiangxi People's Publishing House, after publishing summaries of renowned works in Western psychology, law, education, philosophy, and other disciplines, has now published A Concise Introduction to Western Aesthetic Masterpieces. This is an extensive academic foundation project, drawing on the essence of foreign academic achievements, and a meritorious act that contributes to the construction of Chinese culture. It is a high-quality, academically valuable, and reader-friendly series that also accumulates cultural heritage and helps people understand Western academia. Therefore, it is worth studying and appreciating. A Concise Introduction to Western Aesthetic Masterpieces includes eighty-eight famous works in aesthetics, written by scholars from dozens of countries, spanning a time frame of two thousand four hundred years. Each work is preceded by a brief introduction to the author's life and achievements. Reading these "background" texts makes understanding the content of the works much smoother. The book extensively covers the representative works of nearly ninety great thinkers in the West. Many of these original works have not yet been translated into Chinese, so selecting, studying, and writing concise summaries of them has been an enormous task. The book is the crystallization of sweat and wisdom from dozens of researchers. Striving to preserve the essence and style of the original works is precisely what the Introduction deliberately pursues and is also its distinctive feature. In many chapters, the highlights of the great thinkers' works—such as their brilliant insights, important viewpoints, innovative ideas, memorable quotes, and maxims—are preserved in this book. For example, chapters on Longinus' On the Sublime, Hegel's Aesthetics, and Nietzsche's The Birth of Tragedy. This five hundred eighty thousand-word book essentially encompasses representative works from the masterpieces of Western aesthetics throughout history. The commentary and evaluation not only retain the original flavor but also reflect contemporary perspectives. The compilers can be considered competent "guides" leading researchers and readers to explore Western aesthetic works. Due to differences in the academic expertise and cultivation of the authors, some of the summaries are somewhat thin and weak. Some articles are merely "descriptions," while others offer critiques of the selected masterpieces, reflecting personal opinions, and some even briefly introduce the social impact of the works, which is more helpful to readers than "describing without evaluating." Under the guidance of the "guide," readers can purposefully seek treasures in the treasure trove of aesthetics. The book includes a highly valuable introduction to the history of aesthetics, and each chapter provides a brief introduction to the original author, which is beneficial. However, most introductions are overly simplistic, merely "a chronological account," and there are not many chapters with distinctive features. In my opinion, the works related to aesthetics by these famous authors should be listed separately, with a focus on evaluating their academic careers and contributions in aesthetics. Additionally, the status of the selected articles in the author's aesthetic career should be introduced. If vivid achievements and struggles in their academic research could be selected to add some "imagination," it would enhance the book's "charm" and "appeal," allowing readers to more deeply appreciate their creative contributions to aesthetics, which would undoubtedly be beneficial.
