The medical community has been concerned about insulin resistance and its related diseases for more than half a century, and the concepts of the "common soil" and "death quartet" of metabolic syndrome have been discussed for over a decade. Recent research has brought more attention to metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome includes insulin resistance, obesity, impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hyperuricemia, all interrelated and creating a vicious cycle of mutual causation. Metabolic syndrome is the "breeding ground" for Egyptian atherosclerosis, while atherosclerosis serves as the "bridge" to cardiovascular diseases, which have now become the leading killer threatening people's health and lives. In China, stroke has the highest incidence rate, while in developed Western countries, coronary heart disease is more prevalent. Diseases caused by atherosclerosis, such as stroke, myocardial infarction, acute heart failure, and renal failure, are characterized by high incidence, high disability rates, and high mortality. Metabolic syndrome is preventable and treatable. By increasing awareness, treatment rates, and control rates of metabolic syndrome among the public, its incidence, mortality, and disability rates can be reduced. Preventing and treating metabolic syndrome is a major task for improving people's physical health. This book aims to popularize understanding of metabolic syndrome, promote a scientific lifestyle, and achieve the goals of prevention, treatment, and improvement of metabolic syndrome.
