How to calculate the burn area in children?

Patient's question:

Because we are busy with work, the child has always been living with the elderly. A few days ago, the elderly accidentally burned the child, and they went to the hospital for treatment. Now the child's condition is basically stable. The doctor said the child has a first-degree burn. So, what is the method for calculating the burn area in children?

Doctor's answer:

Chinese Nine-Part Method: The human body is divided into 11 parts, each part being equal to 9% of the body surface area. For example, the head and neck account for one nine, which is 9% of the body surface area. In cases of burns to the head and neck, the burned area should be considered as 9%. The head and neck can be further divided into the scalp, face, and neck, each accounting for 3%. If only the face is burned, the estimated burned area would be 3%.
The calculation of body surface area for children differs slightly from that for adults because children have relatively larger heads and smaller limbs. Therefore, children of different ages can be calculated using the following formulas.
