Features: The American nation is a nation of immigrants and diversity. The United States has accepted more immigrants than any other country—totaling over 50 million people—and still welcomes nearly 700,000 each year. In the past, many American writers have emphasized the melting pot idea, meaning that new immigrants would abandon their old traditions and adopt American ways. For example, generally speaking, immigrant children learn English rather than their parents' language. But recently, Americans have begun to value diversity, and minority groups have started to rebuild and celebrate their heritage. Immigrant children often learn two languages during their upbringing. Across the United States, a vast transportation system composed of aviation, railways, highways, expressways, and waterways is necessary to connect the regions. Before water routes connected the Midwest to the coast, the Midwest was the only outpost of the southeastern coast. After railways passed through the West, the region developed rapidly. Modern America grew with the development of railways, then cars and trucks roared on all-weather highways, and fast-flying airplanes in the sky finally enabled residents scattered across the country to reach other areas in the shortest time.
