Features: The College English Test Band 4 (CET-4) is a proficiency test. Proficiency tests have the advantages of strong scientific rigor in question design, high reliability and validity. However, proficiency tests also have their disadvantages: many fixed question types and patterns are included in the questions. In reality, a set of examination questions is merely a specific manifestation and variation of these fixed types and patterns. As long as you practice extensively and identify the patterns of question-setting, it is easy to overcome the difficulties of the CET-4, and many students can even score higher than their actual abilities. The CET-4 is very similar to the TOEFL exam abroad, both being proficiency tests. Many Chinese students who are not very proficient in English can achieve relatively high scores after doing a certain amount of TOEFL practice. It is not uncommon for them to score 600 on TOEFL in China. The same principle applies to the CET-4—mastering past papers is a shortcut. Currently, there are dozens of versions of books containing past examination questions, and based on a comprehensive review of these books, we have done extensive work to develop the unique features of this book:
1. Answer Verification Some students may wonder: Is it even a problem if the answers are wrong? Let’s be honest and tell you that based on the information we have collected, it is difficult to find a single book without incorrect answers among the many available—despite some of them being quite famous. Many students are baffled by wrong answers and annotations after completing the questions. For the same question, checking three books may yield three different answers, leaving them unsure which one to trust. Therefore, this book uniquely proposes the principle of "emphasizing the correctness and uniqueness of answers," which is considered a "novelty" in this context.
2. Full Translation Translation is an excellent method for improving the English proficiency of non-English majors. Through dedicated effort, this book provides full translations for all sections except listening, revealing both the surface and essence of CET-4 examination questions. This serves as a reference for students when they are unsure about the meaning of the text, but more importantly, it transforms the entire exam into a translation training exercise. In this way, your English skills will improve fundamentally.
3. Detailed Explanations A common experience for students reading books is that many of them provide explanations for questions in a very arbitrary manner—"they explain extensively what you already know, but gloss over or skip what you don’t." Many books explain difficult questions with vague reasoning like "it contradicts the meaning of the text, so it is the wrong answer." The compilers of this book are all teachers with years of experience in teaching, and they deeply understand the needs of examinees. Based on extensive statistical data accumulated from teaching, we provide detailed explanations for the questions. If 90% of the people get a question right, we skip it; but if more than half get it wrong, we explain it thoroughly, without avoiding the important points. This makes the doubts clearer and the difficulties more prominent. This is why we dare to call this section "detailed explanations."
Based on a comprehensive and scientific analysis of the needs of CET-4 examinees, we have devoted ourselves to the compilation, annotation, and translation of this book. The answers, annotations, and translations in this book are correct, targeted, and authoritative. We recommend using the complete set of past papers as the primary material for intensive training before the exam, rather than relying on predictions or guesswork. We emphasize that through practice with full past papers, students can review the key points and difficulties of college English teaching, which will help them integrate their knowledge of English and master their language skills. Anyone who tries to take shortcuts, look for tricks, or rely on predictions will ultimately face repeated failures. Therefore, we must start with solid fundamentals, including vocabulary and grammar, and then systematically improve reading, listening, writing, and translation skills. In the final weeks before the exam, students should do several more sets of full past papers to simulate real exam conditions, identify gaps, and bridge them—this is the true path to success in passing the CET-4.
