Features: In 2004, it was the 100th anniversary of the birth of Deng Xiaoping, the chief architect of China's reform and opening-up and modernization drive. As we look back at the dramatic changes Deng Xiaoping experienced in the 20th century with a historical perspective, marveling at China's century-old vicissitudes and profound historical transformations, we also feel even more deeply Deng Xiaoping's greatness. Comrade Jiang Zemin, in his report to the 15th National Congress, praised Deng Xiaoping as one of the three great figures of China in the 20th century. The report of the 16th National Congress lauded Deng Xiaoping's theory as achieving a second leap by combining Marxism with the practical realities of China's revolution and construction. Comrade Hu Jintao, the core of the new leadership collective, highly evaluated Deng Xiaoping's theory at the symposium on the Important Thought of "Three Represents" as the "greatest theoretical achievement" that emerged from the combination of Marxism with the practical realities of China's revolution and construction. All of this makes us feel that Deng Xiaoping was an outstanding statesman, a profound thinker, and a great man with extraordinary charm and lasting influence. Based on years of in-depth study of Deng Xiaoping's theory and research on it, we, with profound reflection on Deng Xiaoping's extraordinary life and a yearning for the charm of a great man's life, have completed this book, "Getting Closer to Deng Xiaoping," without shying away from our limitations, as a way to express our deep respect and endless longing for Deng Xiaoping.
