What should be done about biliary atresia?

Patient's question:

The child is truly very unfortunate; less than two weeks after birth, it was discovered that the child had biliary atresia, which makes me feel particularly tragic. So, how can such a situation allow the child to survive?

Doctor's answer:

The basic idea of the surgery is that even if the extrahepatic bile duct is blocked, there may still be residual small bile ducts near the porta hepatis. If the fibrous mass in the porta hepatis can be appropriately resected, bile can be drained smoothly, and the patient can survive. Liver transplantation is the only effective treatment for biliary atresia. Biliary atresia accounts for nearly half of liver transplants in children (under 18 years old). Approximately 90 children under the age of one still need a liver transplant before adulthood.
