Part "Mao Zedong through Foreign Eyes," selects articles from seven foreign journalists — Snow, Helen Snow, Epstein, Streng, Stein, Foran, and Betrand — who visited Yan'an before 1945 to interview Mao Zedong, presenting for the first time the reports by progressive Western journalists on Mao Zedong. It also includes a secret report submitted by John Service, the second secretary of the U.S. Embassy in China, after visiting Mao Zedong in Yan'an in 1944 while accompanying the U.S. Military Observation Group. The second part, "Mao Zedong through the Eyes of a Classmate," features "A Brief Biography of Mao Zedong" and "Mao Zedong's Early Revolutionary Activities" written by Mao Zedong's primary school classmate Xiao San. The third part, "Mao Zedong during the Chongqing Negotiations," includes dispatches and features by journalists from media outlets such as "Xinhua Daily" and "Dagongbao" on the grandeur of Mao Zedong's participation in the Chongqing negotiations in August 1945 and the public's evaluation of him. It also includes articles written by the editor, such as "Mao Zedong and His Closest Encounter with Americans," along with biographical sketches, which provide valuable insights for readers to understand the historical context and social relations of the time.
