Can CT be used to check for biliary atresia?

Patient's question:

My classmate's daughter was recently diagnosed with biliary atresia. We know nothing about this disease and don't know what to do. We just want to ask if a CT scan can be used to check for biliary atresia?

Doctor's answer:

Bile duct atresia is caused by bile duct malformations due to hepatitis or liver fibrosis. Color Doppler ultrasound or CT diagnosis requires hospitalization. Bile duct atresia must be treated promptly upon hospital arrival. If not treated in time, bile duct atresia can also lead to abnormal bile excretion, bile stasis, gallstones, hepatocyte bile damage, and liver necrosis. Dynamic observation of serum bilirubin, biochemical tests, liver function tests, bile acid quantification, cholangiography, and liver histopathology examinations are necessary. CT may not provide clear images.
