Purple Letter: The Secret of a Young Girl

Author: (English) Lytton Strachey

Publish Date: 2003-07-01
Features: This book is written in the form of correspondence between two 17-year-old upper-class British girls from the Victorian era. One lives in London, while the other lives in the countryside. The two young girls, at the height of their youth, encounter various confusions of adolescence. They feel curious yet uneasy, but in that era of strict religious and traditional moral constraints, they have no way to obtain the knowledge they desire. Thus, they make a promise to each other to explore as much as they can about the mysteries of love and sexuality, reporting their findings to one another through letters. Initially, their investigations are mostly academic, but gradually, they begin to learn more from life.
