Features: This over 800,000-word Comprehensive History of 20th-Century Chinese Literature is primarily written as a foundational textbook for undergraduate Chinese literature programs. Due to its "institutionalized" specifications in terms of target audience, course nature, traditional objectives, teaching content, and time, we have strived to re-examine and integrate the long-standing concepts of modern Chinese literature history and contemporary Chinese literature history, along with their rich related content, based on years of teaching and research in modern and contemporary Chinese literature, while also referencing existing numerous textbooks on modern and contemporary literature history. The periodization of literary history, whether for ancient, modern, or 20th-century Chinese literature, has largely been based on the changes in political systems and political movements in previous literary history teaching. Major political changes inevitably affect literature, but literature also has its own internal laws of change. A literary periodization that ignores the internal laws of literature first abandons the essence of literature. A scientific view of literary history should reject the complete replacement of literary periodization with periodization based solely on political movements.
