Features: Frostbite is a type of tissue damage caused by exposure to low temperatures, often occurring in the extremities and exposed parts of the body, such as hands, feet, tips of the nose, ears, and cheeks. During winter, old sores are prone to recur. Based on the severity, frostbite can be classified as mild or severe.
Mild Frostbite: Initially, the skin in the affected area becomes pale, numb, and cold. Then, swelling or purplish discoloration with bruises forms, accompanied by a burning sensation, itching, and localized swelling. In some cases, blisters of varying sizes may appear, causing pain and slight itching. Without infection, the area gradually dries, forms a black scab, and eventually falls off to heal. The damage affects the superficial or full thickness of the skin and is generally referred to as frostbite.
Severe Frostbite: Initially, the skin in the affected area is also pale, with cold pain and numbness, and loss of touch. Then, it becomes dark red and swollen. After blisters burst, the wound appears purple, with necrosis or ulcers, and may even damage muscles and tendons. The affected area may present with dry, black necrosis, leading to complete loss of sensation and motor function. If severe infection occurs, systemic symptoms such as chills and high fever may accompany.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that this condition is primarily caused by cold exposure, qi stagnation, blood stasis, impaired local blood circulation, poor qi and blood flow, and tissue hypoxia. The treatment principle is to activate blood circulation, resolve stasis, warm the channels, dispel cold, reduce swelling, and relieve pain. The following foot bath formula can be used.
