Features: The College English Test Band 6 (CET-6) is a national standardized examination directly supervised by the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education and organized by the National College English Test Band 6 Committee. This test was first administered in January 1989 and has been ongoing for nearly 20 years. Currently, the test is held twice a year, before the end of each semester. From the analysis of recent CET-6 exam papers, it is evident that the trend in question setting focuses on assessing students' fundamental language knowledge while emphasizing their ability to comprehensively apply the language. This is primarily reflected in the following aspects:
1. The listening section has introduced a compound dictation. This comprehensive testing format not only assesses students' listening skills but also evaluates their spelling, pronunciation, note-taking, and memory abilities. It is expected that the listening section of the future CET-6 exam will continue this trend in question setting.
2. Reading comprehension is the most heavily weighted section in the CET-6 exam. Analyzing recent exam papers reveals that the reading comprehension section covers a wide range of topics, including biographies, social, cultural, everyday knowledge, and popular science. Among these, articles related to school education and university life, as well as those on sociology, psychology, environmental studies, and biographies, are most common. The CET-6 syllabus specifies that reading comprehension passages should be "diverse in genre, including narrative, descriptive, expository, and argumentative texts." However, recent question setting has primarily used expository and argumentative texts. These passages are characterized by a large amount of information, complex structures, strong logical coherence, and a focus on abstract thinking such as summarizing, judging, and reasoning. The question formats mainly test candidates' ability to infer the central idea, general meaning, or details and facts of the passages.
3. Word usage and grammatical structure are traditional question types in the CET-6 exam, designed to assess students' vocabulary and mastery of grammar. Key areas of focus include homophones with similar or different meanings, synonyms, near-synonyms, or antonyms, collocations, and distinctions between verbs, nouns, and adjectives. The grammar section emphasizes thirteen forms, including subjunctive mood, participles, and non-finite verbs.
4. Cloze is a flexible question type that has emerged in recent years, testing candidates' ability to comprehensively apply language knowledge at the discourse level.
5. English-Chinese translation and short answer questions are newly introduced question types in recent years, primarily designed to assess students' foundational knowledge while cultivating their ability to understand, analyze, and express language.
6. Writing remains a crucial component of college English teaching, as it comprehensively evaluates whether students can meet the teaching requirements specified in the syllabus and achieve the goals of language application and communication skills. Examining recent papers reveals that outline-based essays, topic-sentence essays, and picture-based essays remain the main directions for question setting in the CET-6 exam.
7. In addition to the above question types, we predict that the CET-6 exam may introduce a new type of question in the near future—Chinese-English translation. To help students familiarize themselves with and master this new question type, this book will introduce relevant techniques for Chinese-English translation.
