Features: In the field of cartography, maps before the Qing Dynasty are generally referred to as ancient maps, those from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China as old maps, and those after the liberation as new maps. This book primarily introduces old maps from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China. It includes 65 old Shanghai maps of various types, featuring both single maps and map collections; comprehensive maps, as well as thematic maps such as transportation, postal services, and shipping docks; maps of the British, American, and French concessions, as well as maps of the Shanghai central area and the old city. There are hand-drawn color maps, black-and-white lithographs, official publications, and privately drawn maps. The publication dates of the maps range from the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty to the early years of the founding of the People's Republic of China. To facilitate readers' understanding, we have briefly categorized and described the maps, accompanied by corresponding old photographs, hoping to reflect the general outline of urban development in modern Shanghai over a century. This book, Old Shanghai Maps, is a condensed history of modern Shanghai.
After the liberation, especially since the reform and opening-up in the 1980s, Shanghai has undergone tremendous changes in its urban landscape, and maps reflecting the new city have been continuously released at an unprecedented pace. The Shanghai Library, which takes it upon itself to collect local documents of Shanghai, is watching the city's changes with joy and doing its utmost to gather various versions of new maps.
