Features: Since the 20th century, the development of basic and clinical research on diabetes has been remarkable. Significant progress has been made in understanding the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of acute and chronic complications of diabetes. The global prevalence of diabetes is continuously increasing, particularly with the improvement of living standards and the Westernization of lifestyles. In China, the increasing life expectancy and the growing elderly population have led to a rising incidence of diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes. Given China's large population, the total number of diabetes patients ranks among the highest globally. Currently, diabetes has become the third major non-communicable diseaseing human health, after malignant tumors and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, preventing diabetes in susceptible populations, early diagnosis and timely, appropriate treatment for diabetes patients, and the prevention of chronic complications and comorbidities have become a challenging task for clinical and basic researchers. Professor Jiang Guoyan (1924–1996), the editor-in-chief of "Practical Diabetes Medicine," published the book in 1992, compiling it based on his decades of research in diabetes. To date, the book has been printed five times and distributed over 20,000 copies, reflecting its high demand. With the advancement of medical science, it is necessary to integrate new knowledge about diabetes with clinical practice and summarize it. This is the purpose of our new edition of "Practical Diabetes Medicine." The new edition of "Practical Diabetes Medicine" is designed from a practical perspective, with modifications and adjustments to the content. It has been expanded from 7 parts and 50 chapters to 10 parts and 58 chapters, with some chapters removed and new, more recent, and practical chapters added to be presented to readers.
