The original 《》 was compiled by the Qing Dynasty physician Wang Ang, selecting 205 famous formulas, categorized, and composed in rhyming poetry, covering composition, function, and indications in a concise and memorable manner. It has been widely favored by scholars for 300 years, benefiting countless traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. In recent years, Yan Yun added nearly 100 commonly used formulas as supplements to the original work, enriching its content. Due to the original's poetic style and brevity, it was difficult to fully comprehend, so in the early 1960s, we published a colloquial explanation version, which has been highly acclaimed and reprinted 32 times in its second edition. However, with the development of the discipline, the previous edition no longer meets modern readers' needs. Therefore, the Department of Formulas at Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has revised this third edition. This revision has made the book even more perfect, explaining each formula with its origin, followed by eight sections: rhyme, explanation, composition, usage, function, indications, analysis, and supplementary formulas. The content is comprehensive, rich, and practical. It not only preserves the original style but also adds modern dosage and usage. The function and indications are more standardized and accurate, with detailed analysis of the principal, deputy, assistant, and envoy herbs, revealing the principles of formula composition. Appropriately added supplementary formulas expand the application range of the main formulas, increasing the total number of formulas to 445. The book is well-balanced in detail, clear in priorities, easy to understand, and more convenient for readers to learn, master, and apply.
