Features: The "Atlas of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region" is an atlas introducing the general overview of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, consisting of four parts: introductory maps, municipal and county maps, city maps, and tourist attraction maps. The introductory maps primarily reflect the natural environment and overall landscape of the region. The municipal and county maps provide a detailed representation of water systems, residential areas, roads, and tourist sites in each city (district) and county, accompanied by text descriptions. The city maps illustrate the street layouts, government agencies, and the distribution of enterprises and institutions. The tourist attraction maps show the floor plans of famous tourist sites in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, along with textual explanations.
Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, abbreviated as "Ning," is located in the northwest of China, in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. It covers an area of 66,000 square kilometers and has a population of 5.3 million, making it one of the main residential areas for the Hui ethnic group in China. The region administers three prefecture-level cities and one administrative office in one prefecture, which in turn governs two county-level cities and 15 counties. The capital of the autonomous region is Yinchuan. Major cities in the region include Shizuishan, Wuzhong, and Qingtongxia.
The region is situated at the junction of the Inner Mongolian Plateau and the Loess Plateau, with terrain dominated by mountains and plateaus, all at an elevation of over 1,000 meters. The northwest is covered by desert. Major mountains include Liupanshan, He'ershan, and Niuruishan. The terrain between the mountains is relatively flat, featuring the Yinchuan Plain and the Weininxian Plain. The Yellow River flows from south to north through the region, with the Qingshui River and Kushui River being important tributaries.
Ningxia is located in a temperate continental climate zone. Due to its overall terrain, temperatures are lower in the south and higher in the north, while precipitation is greater in the south and less in the north. The average annual temperature ranges from 5 to 10°C, and the annual precipitation varies from 190 to 700 millimeters. The region's mineral resources are primarily coal, along with gypsum, limestone, iron, phosphorus, and salt. The industrial sector includes coal, electricity, machinery, wool spinning, construction materials, and food processing, as well as traditional handicrafts like leatherworking and carpet making.
The region has a long history of agricultural production, benefiting from Yellow River water conservancy facilities. The Yinchuan Plain, a fertile expanse of over a thousand miles, has long been known as the "Jiangnan of the North" and is famously said to be "the Yellow River has always enriched Ningxia." The main crops include rice, wheat, sorghum, and corn, as well as economic crops like flax, rapeseed, and sugar beets. The livestock industry is primarily focused on sheep, with the Tan sheep and Sha known for their high-quality wool. The region is also one of China's major dairy and beef production bases.
Transportation in the region is dominated by railways and highways. The Bao-Lan Railway is the main arterial line, with branches like Pingru, Baozhong, Ganwu, and Yinxin. Highway networks radiate from cities like Yinchuan, connecting national and local roads into a comprehensive system. Yinchuan has air transportation services, and parts of the Yellow River are navigable for water transport.
Tourist attractions in Ningxia are primarily cultural landmarks. The Xixia Imperial Tombs are the burial grounds of the Xixia emperors, known for their grand scale and solemn atmosphere, often referred to as the "Oriental Pyramids." The Shapotou Desert Control Area in the Yellow River is an important research base for desertification control in China, offering a rich landscape that combines scientific research and tourism.
