Only those with profound humanistic sentiments of compassion for the suffering and empathy for all living beings can truly appreciate the depth and richness of legal history and recognize its sacred historical responsibility. Today, as the nation is obsessed with profit and in a state of frenzy, fewer and fewer people are engaged in poetry. We cannot help but be concerned. At the same time, legal history, as the true deep waters in the vast lake of law, can only be navigated by those with exceptional skills. Yet now, fewer and fewer people have both the ability and the courage to enter this deep water. In this era of "two shortages"—the lack of great scholars who can awaken the nation's humanistic responsibility and the lack of legal historians with the capacity and determination to carry forward the torch—we yearn for a revival of calls to action to awaken the nation's humanistic consciousness, for more in-depth, rigorous, and broad-minded academic research in legal history, and for new legal historians who are willing to step up, full of vigor, and to inherit the legacy. This is the purpose and driving force behind the journal Chinese and Western Legal Traditions.
