Can newborn hearing screening be done at the pediatric department?

Patient's question:

At first, I didn't know, but later I heard from others that newborns also need to undergo a newborn screening. Since we had already been discharged, we could only go to the hospital for the screening. Could you please tell me if newborn hearing screening can be booked under pediatrics?

Doctor's answer:

Neonatal hearing screening requires a visit to the pediatric department or outpatient clinic. Neonatal hearing screening is an objective, rapid, and non-invasive examination method, such as auditory brainstem response (ABR), otoacoustic emissions (OAE), and impedance tests, which is conducted while the newborn is naturally sleeping or in a quiet state. Reports from domestic and international studies indicate significant differences in the incidence of hearing loss between normal newborns and high-risk newborns. The incidence of hearing loss in normal newborns is approximately 1%-3%, while in high-risk newborns, it is approximately 2%-4%.
