Features: The title of this book—"Yuan Dao"—might seem confusing at first glance, leaving one at a loss for words. Some explanation is needed. In ancient Chinese, the character "Yuan" carries multiple meanings. Broadly summarized, there are four main interpretations:
1. "Seeking," as seen in the line "Yuan yuan shu wei ji" from the poem "Ren Jing Ting Shan" in the Wen Xuan, which implies the act of seeking the source without reaching it.
2. "Following," as explained in an ancient text: "Yuan refers to adorning the edge."
3. "Adapting," as noted in the Tian Zi Fang: "Xu yuan er bao zhen," meaning to remain true to oneself while adapting.
4. "Following," as stated in Guang Ya·Ji Guo Si Si: "Yuan, to follow." Wang Nian Sun further clarified in his annotations: "In the Han Shi Wai Chuan, 'yuan' means to follow the principle. In the Shui Yuan Za Yan chapter of the Shui Yuan Za Yan, 'yuan' is used interchangeably with 'xun.'" These four meanings are still applicable in modern society. The author has combined them to convey the pursuit, continuation, adaptation, and adherence to the "Dao." In essence, it means exploring and following the path of life.
