What are the treatments for neonatal hemolytic disease?

Patient's question:

I have been married to my husband for more than three years. Recently, our work was not very busy, and we were about to have a child. However, after our child was born, he suffered from hemolytic disease. Could you please ask about the treatment methods for neonatal hemolytic disease?

Doctor's answer:

Hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) refers to the blood type antibodies produced by the mother due to blood type incompatibility between the mother and fetus, which are not matched with the blood type antigens of the fetus. These antibodies enter the fetus through the placenta, causing homologous immune hemolysis. It has been found that there is blood type incompatibility between the Rh blood group system and the ABO blood group system. Phototherapy is the simplest and most effective method to reduce serum bilirubin. When serum bilirubin reaches the standard for phototherapy, it should be performed promptly. Albumin increases the binding of free bilirubin, reducing the incidence of bilirubin encephalopathy. When the serum bilirubin level reaches the exchange blood standard according to different gestational ages and different days, exchange blood treatment needs to be performed. ABO hemolysis only requires blood exchange in a few severe cases.
