He received his university education in Taiwan and obtained a master's degree in history from National Taiwan University. Later, he pursued further studies in the United States, earning a master's degree in Russian history from the University of Minnesota and a doctorate in East Asian history from Stanford University (during which he studied at Fudan University in Shanghai for a year). He analyzes the design of the "person" in Chinese culture, arguing that the individual in China is defined by the group, differing from the Western definition of the individual. This book was first published in the 1980s and had a wide influence in China at the time, spreading in photocopied form among many universities. The author is currently a professor in the Department of History at the University of Memphis in the United States.
