As an important part of Confucian classics, the study of the I Ching is a form of annotation and interpretation in ancient China, which in modern Western terms is called hermeneutics (or exegesis). It is called hermeneutics because the study of the I Ching primarily uses methods such as transmission annotations, explanations, annotations, resolving doubts, and textual research to understand and interpret the text of the I Ching, exploring the thoughts or principles that the author of the I Ching was aware of and unaware of. This annotation not only focuses on the meaning of words, phrases, and sentences in the I Ching, i.e., transforming the language and meaning of the I Ching through etymology, but also simply replicates, paraphrases the original essence of the I Ching, and reproduces the author's life world. On this basis, it further creates the text of the I Ching based on the knowledge and experience of the interpreter, expanding and elevating its meaning to better understand the author's thoughts. What distinguishes the I Ching from other ancient classics is that it not only has archaic and obscure textual language used for divination but also a highly rigorous, highly abstract symbolic system closely related to this text. This is the key to why the I Ching has become an infinite source and eternal matrix for later interpreters to understand and interpret.
The Yi Wei is a series of books by Han Dynasty scholars interpreting the I Ching. This book provides a compilation and introduction to the Yi Wei. It introduces the composition of the Yi Wei, its rise and decline, its listings and collations, the cosmology of the Yi Wei and the trend of Confucianism and Taoism merging in the Han Dynasty, the three meanings of the Yi Wei and Zheng Ji's interpretations, the hexagram qi theory and the theory of I Ching numbers in the Yi Wei, as well as the value and influence of the Yi Wei. After the introduction, there is a collation of the Yi Wei. This book strives to stand at the forefront of academia, demonstrating and elaborating its own ideas, showcasing the latest research findings in the study of the I Ching, and providing a systematic and complete reference for Yi Wei scholars.
