Features: This book is based on historical records such as the Qing Imperial Chronicles, Qing archival documents, and personal notes from Qing-era scholars. It focuses on the inner workings of the imperial court, highlighting the lives of some empresses and concubines with distinctive characteristics. Through their personal joys and sorrows, the book reveals the relationship between marriage and rise or fall. It is often said that "when the empire rises or falls, every man has a responsibility," but in critical moments, even women cannot escape. Moreover, those closest to the pinnacle of power! This book deciphers the truth about empresses and concubines, dispelling misconceptions in fictional portrayals. It takes the fates of twelve Qing empresses and concubines as a starting point, revealing their experiences and their direct or indirect roles in historical events. Their insights into the rise and fall of dynasties, political storms, and power struggles are mostly gained through their own circumstances or by observing the lives and fortunes of their children and close relatives. Home is the window through which they observe society and understand the rise and fall, as well as the stage where they showcase their worth. Among the twelve empresses and concubines chosen for this book, apart from Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang and Empress Dowager Cixi, who were closely tied to the rise and fall of the Qing Dynasty, the book also describes the legendary yet tragic life of Empress Wu Lanan, who left her mark during Nurhaci's founding of the empire. The mysterious experiences and passionate love affair of Empress Xiaoxian Dongge are explored, as well as the suffering of Empress De of Kangxi, who was caught in the political turmoil of the succession dispute in the late Kangxi era, and the fate of Empress Nian during the political struggles surrounding the ascension of Emperor Yongzheng. These stories reveal the unbearable pain of concubines during times of high-power transition. Under the peaceful reign of Emperor Qianlong, Empress Wu Lanan of the subsequent reign fought against neglect but was not forgiven even after her death. When the Forbidden City was bloodied, Empress Niu's of Jiaqing era already harbored a sense of decline. As for Empress Jing of Daoguang, who endured the external shock of the Opium Wars and failed to help her emperor choose a suitable heir, she could only watch as the dynasty declined from one generation to the next. Empress Zhen of Guangxu, who was killed for her reformist ideas, and Empress Dowager of Guangxu, who was entirely at the mercy of Empress Dowager Cixi, both became victims of late Qing politics—one lost her life, the other became a dowager empress of a fallen nation. These women, who came so close to the pinnacle of power, were abnormal in both their emotional lives and family dynamics. While feeling the coldness of high status, they also lived in constant fear of the abyss. Twisted by imperial etiquette, their hearts were both sensitive to pain and almost numb to it. Caught between emotions and rigid hierarchies, between family bonds and political storms, they sought balance, thus writing out distinct life destinies—some tragic and sorrowful, some passionate and lingering, some sigh-worthy, some content, some thrilling, some filled with regrets, some too terrible to enumerate. During Nurhaci's rise to power, the founding of the empire, and the establishment of the state, Empress Wu Lanan left her mark, directly or indirectly. In the struggle for power, she was sacrificed, but her vitality, fierce personality, and extraordinary wisdom were passed down through her son. The dramatic Qing army's conquest of the Central Plains and the establishment of its dominance were carried out under the command of her son, Dorgon.
