The story takes place in the city of Saumur in western France. On the birthday night of the only daughter of the wealthiest man in the city, Eugene Grandet, an unexpected guest arrives from Paris—Eugene's cousin Charles. It turns out that Charles's father had been defrauded into bankruptcy and committed suicide with a gunshot, leaving Grandet to care for his son's future. After reading his brother's suicide note, Grandet remains composed and instead seizes the opportunity to profit. Charles finds himself in dire straits and living under the wing of others. However, the miserly Grandet's daughter possesses a noble heart. She sympathizes with Charles's misfortune and falls deeply in love with him. Upon learning that he lacks funds to conduct business in India, she gives him all her savings in gold coins. In return, Charles leaves his mother's gold jewelry box as a keepsake for Eugene. The two swear eternal love to each other.
On New Year's Day, Grandet discovers that Eugene has spent her gold coins. Enraged, he imprisons her. His wife, overwhelmed by fear, falls ill and does not recover. The notary warns Grandet that Eugene has the right to inherit her mother's estate, forcing Grandet to reconcile with his daughter and make her sign a document renouncing her inheritance. After Grandet's death, he leaves behind a vast fortune. Eugene instantly becomes a millionaire, and admirers and suitors flock to her. However, she remains determined to wait for Charles. Meanwhile, Charles has amassed a fortune in India through despicable means like selling people, and he has long forgotten Eugene. Upon returning to Paris, he breaks his promise with her. Additionally, his refusal to repay his father's debts prevents him from marrying a noblewoman. Devastated and filled with resentment, Eugene lives a life of melancholy but still pays off Charles's father's debts. When Charles learns of Eugene's immense wealth, he regrets his actions deeply.
