Margaret Whitman was born in 1958 in Cold Spring Harbor, New York City, into a well-to-do, educated middle-class family. She was the second of three children. Due to her parents' love and care, coupled with her own intelligence, her upbringing was quite smooth. Even in her teenage years, Whitman showed exceptional intelligence and remarkable ambition. She completed all the required high school courses in just three years. After graduating from high school, she achieved excellent results and was admitted to her dream school, Princeton University—one of the renowned Ivy League universities in the United States. At university, she earned a bachelor's degree in economics.
Margaret's time at Princeton University was in the 1970s, an era dominated by disco. Almost everyone around her was immersed in the frenetic rhythms of disco. Newspapers, which seemed quite "old-fashioned," were considered out of touch with the times and no longer suitable for leisurely reading. Boring financial newspapers were even less appealing. However, Margaret was different. She had already developed a strong interest in finance. Not only did she read newspapers, but she also had financial newspapers delivered to her dormitory every day, and she enjoyed it. Her future partner, Boies, who was her classmate at the time and worked at the Texas Pacific Group Investment Company, later recalled her university life with a smile: "Margaret was unbelievable to me and my classmates because she actually had the Wall Street Journal in her room!" Margaret was indeed an extraordinary girl, and this became even clearer in her later career.
After graduating from Princeton, Margaret went on to earn a Master's degree in Business Administration from the Harvard Business School. During her time at Harvard, she not only excelled academically but also demonstrated a wide range of interests outside of studies. Swimming and baseball were her favorite sports, showing her clear athletic talent.
After graduating from Harvard, Whitman followed a conventional path in her career, working at several major domestic companies such as Procter & Gamble, Disney, and Hasbro. Procter & Gamble marked the beginning of Whitman's career. She worked in brand management at the Cincinnati office of Procter & Gamble. Later, she served as the senior vice president of marketing at Disney. She also held the position of vice president at the San Francisco office of the renowned consulting firm Bain & Company for eight years. Additionally, Whitman served as the general manager of the preschool division at Hasbro, Inc., overseeing the global management and marketing of two world-famous children's brands, " Playskool " and " Mr. Potato Head." She successfully completed the repositioning of the company's brands and retail stores.
After that, she became the president and CEO of FTD, the world's largest floral products company. It can be said that Margaret Whitman had a smooth and enviable personal journey. Until she joined eBay, Whitman seemed to have it all figured out. It was only after joining eBay that she truly began to feel the challenges of life.
