Features: One Thousand and One Nights is a famous collection of Arabic folktales. In the past, it was also translated into Arabian Nights in China. The stories in this collection are linked by a tale: It is said that there was a country called Sansan between ancient India and China. King Sharyar, resenting his queen's unfaithfulness, had her killed. Afterward, he would marry a young girl every day and have her executed the next morning, causing fear among the people. The daughter of the prime minister, Scheherazade, to save countless innocent girls, voluntarily married the king. She told him stories every night, captivating his interest and saving herself from death. Her stories spanned one thousand and one nights, finally taming the king and winning his lifelong love.
The stories in One Thousand and One Nights began to circulate in the 8th century and were standardized by the 16th century, becoming popular worldwide. These tales were not the creation of a single author but rather the result of centuries of collection, refinement, and elaboration by a wide range of folk artists and scholars in the Middle East. They include fables, fairy tales, myths, adventure stories, love stories, and anecdotes of famous figures. Primarily reflecting the social systems and customs of medieval Arabia and some Asian countries, these stories are rich in imagination and vivid in description, exerting a broad influence on literature and art worldwide.
We plan to select some of the finest stories and adapt them into One Thousand and One Nights: Read with Pictures, published in separate volumes. We hope it will be well-received by readers.
