The Chen surname originated during the era of King Wu of Zhou. After King Wu unified the world, he revered the ancient sages and virtuous rulers, enfeoffing Hu Gong Man, a descendant of Emperor Shun, as the ruler of Chen. This marked the origin of the Chen surname. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, the State of Chen was destroyed, and the descendants of Hu Gong Man adopted the state name as their surname. The founding ancestor of the Chen surname is Hu Gong Man.
