The book tells the story of a mischievous little boy named Nils who dislikes studying and loves pranks. Nils, who is always teasing small animals, is transformed into a tiny thumb-sized human by an elf after teasing one. At that moment, a flock of geese flies overhead, and a male goose in his home also wants to spread its wings and follow them. So, he rides on the goose's back and embarks on a journey southward, exploring various places. Along the way, he gains much knowledge, makes many friends, hears many legends and stories, and experiences countless dangers. During the long journey, Nils gradually grows up, learns the difference between good and evil, and learns to empathize and love.
