Is the child's ventricular septal defect serious?

Patient's question:

This is the four-day-old child's color Doppler ultrasound. The child is now two months old and shows no discomfort. There is a continuous interruption of about 2.6 mm at the upper part of the interventricular septum. I am not very familiar with this condition, and I would like to ask if the ventricular septal defect is severe?

Doctor's answer:

The ventricular septal defect is severe, and atrial septal defect is a common type of congenital heart defect. Compared to its ventricular septal defect or major artery malformation, atrial septal defect is a type of congenital heart defect that is relatively easy to treat. Generally, there is a chance of spontaneous closure within two years of age. After two years, the possibility of spontaneous closure of atrial septal defect is no longer very high, and surgical treatment needs to be implemented.
