Like the National Excellent Children's Literature Award and the Mao Dun Literature Prize, the Lu Xun Literature Prize is one of China's highest honors in literature, organized by the Chinese Writers' Association. It is the only purely literary children's literature award in China. The fifth National Excellent Children's Literature Award selected several of the most outstanding works from 181 excellent new children's literature pieces created between 1998 and 2000. These works reflect the significant progress in children's literature creation in China in recent years. Previous selections had gaps in fable and science fiction categories, but this time, works in both genres were included.
